What Happened

Sifted’s H1 2026 league table shows the top 50 equity investors by deal count in Europe. Balderton led with 22 deals followed by Partech 20 and Seedcamp 18. Total capital deployed hit €12.4B across 347 rounds. London grabbed 42% of the cash Berlin 23% Paris 13%. The remaining 22% was sprinkled across 20 other cities from Stockholm to Lisbon. Median round size climbed to €8.5M up 18% YoY.

Why It Matters

This is not dispersion it is consolidation. Capital is retreating to liquidity rich ecosystems where exits are still possible. The ECB’s tight policy has dried up late stage funding outside the core so VCs double down on repeat founders in proven markets. The result is a barbell Europe with a few overfunded hubs and a long tail of undercapitalized startups. Policy makers in Madrid Warsaw and Amsterdam can subsidize all they want but without local anchor LPs and deep exit pipelines the money will not stick.

Who Wins & Loses

London’s top 5 VCs Balderton Accel Atomico LocalGlobe and Octopus Ventures control 35% of all H1 capital. Berlin’s Earlybird Point Nine and Partech clean up in SaaS. Paris benefits from state backed funds like Bpifrance. Losers are secondary cities where startups face higher dilution or relocation. Corporate VCs like Siemens Next47 and SAP.iO are the only non hub players in the top 20.

What to Watch

Watch for balderton’s next €500M fund and whether Paris can close the gap with Berlin. If London’s IPO window stays shut expect more capital to flee to US crossovers. Stockholm’s fintech pipeline is thinning. Lisbon’s remote first pitch may be its only edge.

Engineers in Barcelona and Munich are vocal about the funding desert. Founders in London are quietly raising at flat valuations. The chatter on Blind and YC’s EU threads is less about product market fit and more about which VC has dry powder. The real signal is the silence from everywhere else.
